Volunteers needed for free children’s clothing exchange

VANDALIA — A local nonprofit is hoping residents will start their spring cleaning a little early this year.

Our Father’s Family Keeper Ministries is seeking clothing donations, as well as volunteers, for its upcoming free spring-summer children’s clothing exchange. Spring and summer apparel in sizes newborn to 14 still in good, clean condition are needed, according to organizers.

The free spring-summer children’s clothing exchange will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the Vandalia Youth Center, located at 18035 State St., Vandalia. All families in the surrounding areas are invited to attend.

The children’s clothing exchange is similar to the popular Mom-2-Mom sales hosted across the Michiana area, where parents can find gently-used donated clothing items for their children. However, OFFKM’s exchange will give items away and not charge families for them.

In addition to donations, volunteers are needed leading up to the event on Thursday and Friday to help sort and arrange clothing and other items.

“Any amount of time you can give is much appreciated,” said Bianca May, the co-founder and executive director of OFFKM. “We are asking potential volunteers to contact us via email (ourfathersfamily@ymail.com) or phone (269) 476-1257) to help us accommodate volunteer availability in one, two, or three-hour increments.

Anyone interested in making a clothing donation can also contact the organization via email or phone to schedule a drop-off, May said.

The Vandalia-based nonprofit, which May and her husband, Curtis, formed in 2012, is using the exchange to further its mission of trying to “be the village” and create a community centered on helping one another, officials said. OFFKM also offers a number of services including youth educational programs, providing furniture and household items for individuals transitioning from shelters into housing, and transportation for those in need of assistance.
